If an image appears to be missing in EXAMINE Pro, it may still be recoverable — but only from the computer that originally processed the x-ray.
🚨 Important - If you're unsure about the recovery process, please contact the Dentally support team before proceeding, as it is possible to permanently delete x-rays during this process!
About EXAMINE Pro image files
A standard radiograph is made up of three separate files:
A Stamp or .BMP file (thumbnail image)
A .DIC file (image data)
A .MIH file (metadata)
These files are temporarily stored in the following folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\SOE\ExPro\Tmp\
Once images are either assigned or deleted, they are typically moved to the Recycle Bin on the local machine.
Restoring a deleted x-ray
Go to the computer where the x-ray was originally taken.
Open the 'Recycle Bin' and sort by 'Date Deleted' to help locate the correct files.
Look for the set of three files (same filename) —
.BMP,.DIC, and.MIH.Select all three, right-click, and choose 'Restore'.
The files will be moved back to the EXAMINE Pro temp folder.
Open the acquisition module in EXAMINE Pro.
The restored image will now appear and can be saved to the patient’s record.
Restoring a deleted intra-oral photo
Intra-oral photos do not restore to the WDM camera module the same way x-rays do. To recover a deleted photo:
Go to the computer where the photo was originally taken.
Open the 'Recycle Bin' and sort by 'Date Deleted'.
Locate the relevant .JPG file(s), right-click the image and select 'Cut'.
Paste the file into a new folder or onto the desktop.
This removes it from the Recycle Bin.
Re-import the photo back into EXAMINE Pro using the 'Import Picture' function.
Once imported, the image will appear in the patient’s image library in EXAMINE pro.
Unable to locate image files
If the image files are not in the Recycle Bin, recovery may still be possible through your imaging hardware:
Contact your x-ray equipment provider to check if the scanner has internal memory or drivers capable of restoring recent scans.
Recovery options may vary depending on the model and configuration of your scanner.
