What is two-factor authentication (2FA)?

2FA adds an extra security layer to your account by requiring an additional verification step when logging in. You can choose between SMS codes or a third-party app (e.g., Google Authenticator) to generate one-time passwords (OTP).

Setting up 2FA

  • Go to your 'User Actions' (By clicking on you name in the top right of Dentally) > 'My Account' > 'Security'.

  • Choose your 2FA method by changing the 'Two-factor authentication' drop down to one of the follow:

  • SMS: Receive a login code via SMS (requires a mobile number).

    • Change 'Two-factor authentication' drop down to 'SMS'

    • Click 'Send SMS Code'.

    • Enter the code sent to your phone in the 'SMS Code' field.

    • Enter your current password and click 'Active 2FA'

  • SMS and OTP: Use both SMS codes and app-generated OTPs.

    • Change the drop down to 'SMS and OTP'

    • Click 'Send SMS code' and enter the received code into the 'SMS code' box.

    • You can then add your 2FA app.

    • Click 'Generate new code'.

    • Use a third-party app (e.g., Google Authenticator) to scan the barcode provided, or simply use your phones camera and select your preferred app when prompted.

    • Confirm on your device you which to add this to your authenticator if prompted.

    • Enter the code generated in the app into the 'App OTP Code' field in your Dentally settings.

    • Enter your current password and complete by clicking 'Active 2FA'.

  • OTP Only: Use a third-party app to generate OTPs without SMS.

Resetting your password with 2FA enabled

If you request a password reset, you must enter an authentication code from your app to verify your identity during the reset password process.

Turning off 2FA

  1. Go to 'User Actions' > 'My Account' > 'Security'.

  2. Scroll down and change the drop down option to 'None'.

  3. Enter your current password and click 'Deactivate 2FA'.

Why use two-factor authentication?

Dentally prioritises the security of your data. Adding 2FA ensures:

  • Increased protection: Provides a second layer of security beyond your password.

  • Prevention of unauthorised access: Even if your password is compromised, your account stays protected.

  • Flexibility for remote work: Keeps your data secure whether you're working in the office or remotely.
