Troubleshooting X-ray image quality issues in Dentally Vision

Written by Amber Morris

If X-ray images appear grainy, overly bright or completely white in Dentally Vision, the issue is usually related to either:

  • Image enhancement settings

  • Scanner or imaging hardware configuration

  • Exposure or handling of imaging plates

This guide covers the most common causes and how to troubleshoot them.

Grainy images

Check image enhancement settings

In some cases, graininess is caused by image enhancement being applied in Dentally Vision.

To check the raw image:

  1. Open the image in Dentally Vision

  2. Locate the enhancement setting

  3. Change the setting to No Enhancement

This displays the original image without additional processing.

Check scanner and exposure settings

If the image still appears grainy with enhancement disabled, the issue is likely related to the imaging hardware or acquisition process.

Common causes include:

  • Incorrect scanner configuration

  • Incorrect exposure settings

  • Hardware calibration issues

Check the scanner settings and X-ray exposure configuration with your hardware supplier if needed.

Bright or scattered images

Bright or scattered artefacts are commonly caused by issues with the imaging plate itself.

Typical causes include:

  • Over-exposure to X-rays

  • Exposure to ambient light before scanning

  • Damaged or worn imaging plates

How to confirm

Recover or preview the plate directly through the scanner software. If the artefact is already visible before the image reaches Dentally Vision, the issue originates from the plate, scanner or acquisition process rather than Dentally Vision itself.

Recommended actions

  • Review exposure settings on the X-ray unit

  • Avoid exposing plates to natural or bright light before scanning

  • Inspect plates for damage or wear

  • Check scanner calibration and maintenance

Completely white images

Completely white images usually indicate a scanner or acquisition failure.

Recommended checks

  • Confirm the plate was scanned correctly

  • Check the scanner connection and status

  • Verify the scanner software is functioning correctly

  • Attempt to reacquire the image

For devices such as PSPIX scanners, contact your hardware supplier for additional troubleshooting if the issue continues.

Disabling automatic enhancement during acquisition

If you prefer to work with raw images by default:

  1. Open the image acquisition settings

  2. Set Apply Enhancement to Not Enhanced

This prevents enhancement being automatically applied to newly acquired images.

๐Ÿ’กPlease note - This only affects future images. Existing images will not be changed.

Preventing future image quality issues

To help avoid recurring image quality problems:

  • Regularly maintain and calibrate scanners and X-ray hardware

  • Follow manufacturer guidance for plate handling

  • Avoid exposing plates to ambient light before scanning

  • Review exposure settings regularly

  • Disable automatic enhancement if raw images are preferred
