As you may know, October 1st 2022 brings about 3 sets of significant changes to the information included on NHS England claims dated on or after that date.

This document deals with change notification CCN50, specifically:

  • Configuring New NHS Endodontic codes

  • NICE Guidelines Recall information

  • Number of Untreated Decayed Teeth

  • Highest BPE Score

Overview of Change:

In NHSEโ€™s letter titled Outcome of 2022/23 Dental Contract Negotiations, one of the changes relates to the Personalisation of Recall Intervals.

In order to better monitor the utilisation and implementation of NICE Guidance on dental recall intervals NHSE wishes to collect data on the presence of untreated decayed teeth and highest BPE sextant score and recommended recall interval.

These codes are to made mandatory on all adult English FP17 claims for Bands 1, 2 and 3 whose Dates of Acceptance are on or after 01/10/22.

One of these codes is already in existence and is 9172 for NICE Guidance Recall Interval. The other two are new codes to record the Highest BPE Sextant Score and the number of Untreated Decayed Teeth.

This update also sees the addition of additional treatment item codes for Molar Endodontics and Non-Molar Endodontics and to discontinue the use of the existing English endodontics code 9305.

How this will work in Dentally:

New Endodontic codes:

NHS England Practices will need to create 2 new Endodontic treatments in their services list using the new NHS Treatment Categories 'Endodontic Treatment - Molar' and 'Endodontic Treatment - Non Molar'.

Read our article here if you are unsure how to add new treatment items to your treatment list in Dentally.

The new treatments should be set with the appropriate NHS Band and use the NHS Treatment Categories 'Endodontic Treatment Molar' and 'Endodontic Treatment Non-Molar'

These new treatments should be used for the appropriate teeth and should only be used on claims starting on or after 01/10/22.

NICE Guidelines Recall Interval:

Upon the submission of an NHS claim with a start date on or after 01/10/2022, of banding 1, 2 or 3, the patient's current Dental Recall Interval is displayed in the claim screen.

This can be altered if required and will update the recall interval stored in the patient's details. Just hit the Update option by the interval and confirm the change to the patient's details. Note: A recall interval of 0 is not permissible for a patient with a band 1, 2 or 3 claim unless Treatment on Referral is indicated.

The Dentist recall interval will be submitted automatically with the claim.

Number of Untreated Decayed Teeth:

Upon the submission of an NHS claim with a start date on or after 01/10/2022, the claim screen will present an option to record the number of Untreated Decayed teeth. This is not a calculated field and requires user input if a change from the default 0 is required:

Highest BPE Score:

Upon the submission of an NHS claim with a start date on or after 01/10/2022, the NHS Claim screen will the display results of any BPE recorded for the patient between the start and end dates of the treatment plan/claim, where one exists. If the BPE was recorded in the last 24 hours, the BPE can be updated using the 'Update BPE' option, or a new BPE can be recorded using the 'Record new BPE' option.

Where a BPE has not been recorded for the patient in Dentally, a BPE can be recorded using the 'Record new BPE' option.

Where a new BPE is recorded, this will be available for review in the usual BPE section of the patient's Chart screen.

Where a BPE is recorded against the claim, the highest sextant recording will automatically be submitted with the claim.

Where a BPE has not been recorded, a highest recording of '-' (blank) will be submitted.
