In the recent NHSE’s letter titled Outcome of 2022/23 Dental Contract Negotiations, you will be aware of the change to Band 2 treatments to improve care to high needs patients.

Band 2 has now been subdivided into three:.

  • Band 2(b) for courses of treatment involving either Non-Molar Endodontics to permanent teeth or a combined total of three or more teeth requiring permanent fillings or extractions. 5 UDA will be awarded

  • Band 2(c) for courses of treatment involving Molar Endodontics on permanent teeth. 7 UDA will be awarded

  • Band 2(a) for all other Band 2 treatments. 3 UDA will continue to be awarded

This means that it is important that the CDS treatments, especially for endodontics, fillings and extractions are recorded and transmitted correctly, as the values going forward will affect the amount of UDA awarded.

(Please note that there is no change to the patient charge calculation. All three of the above will continue to attract the normal Band 2 charge).

Claims will continue to be submitted as Band 2 as they always have done. Compass will use the presence of the appropriate CDS codes as below to award the appropriate UDA value.

How the UDA values are allocated:

  • Code 9370 (Molar Endodontics) present - 7 UDA awarded, otherwise

  • Code 9371 (Non-Molar Endodontics) present - 5 UDA awarded, otherwise

  • A combined total of permanent fillings (code 9306) and extractions (code 9307) greater than 2 - 5 UDA awarded, otherwise

  • All other Band 2 claims - 3 UDA awarded.

This will only apply to NHS England claims whose dates of acceptance are on or after 25/11/22. Prior to that date, the existing Band 2 UDA will continue to be awarded.

So how does this work in Dentally?

Treatments will continue to be charted, charged and submitted in Dentally as before. There are no setting changes required for the Endodontic Treatment Categories introduced in CCN50, which took effect from 1st October 2022, or your standard Filling or Extraction treatments. Dentally will automatically calculate the new UDA values for claims raised from treatment plans started on or after 25th November 2022. You should, however ensure that your Endodontic treatments are configured using the Molar and Non-molar endodontic NHS categories, read all about how to do this here.

Where a treatment plan contains a combination of more than 2 Permanent Fillings and or Extractions, a band 2b claim will be raised (5 UDAs). (eg. 2 Fillings and 1 Extraction, 3 or more Fillings or 3 or more Extractions)

Where a claim contains at least one treatment defined by its NHS Treatment category as 'Non-Molar Endodontics', a band 2b claim will be raised (5 UDAs).

Where a claim contains at least one treatment defined by its NHS Treatment category as 'Molar Endodontics', a band 2c claim will be raised (7 UDAs).

Where a claim contains any number of band 2 treatments, either including or not including a total of 2 or fewer permanent fillings or extractions, a band 2a claim will be raised as before (3 UDAs).

What will this look like?

When a treatment plan falls into one of the updated Banding categories, the patient's charge remains the same and a band 2 charge will still be raised. Upon submission, the claims screen will indicate where a band 2a, 2b or 2c claim will be submitted - as indicated in the NHS communications above, the claim is still submitted as Band 2 and the UDAs awarded are calculated by Compass.

Band 2c Claim example:

Reporting on Band 2a, 2b & 2c claims:

The NHS Claims report has been updated to allow users to report specifically on claims falling into these new bands. Use the Band Selection filter to specifically find claims which fall into the band you require:

Of course, the NHS UDA report will reflect the correct UDA values of your claims, once raised and the returning UDA value from Compass will mark the claims as Completed or Queried as always:
