How do I add and edit a patient's insurance details in Canada?

A patient's insurance details can be added and edited under the patient's 'Insurance' tab - the second tab from the left in the patient's record.

πŸ’‘ Top tip: Adding a patient's insurance details MUST be done before sending insurance claims through Dentally.

To add an insurance policy to a patient's record:

  • In Dentally, go to the 'Insurance' tab in the patient's record.

  • Click on the button β€˜+ Add Plan’.

  • A table will appear listing available plans. Select from the list, or type in the carrier or number in the search box and select your chosen plan.

  • When you have selected your chosen plan, click the 'Select plan' button underneath the table. If you can't find the correct one, select 'Add plan' in the top right to create a new one.

  • Under the 'Plan information' section you will see the 'Policy information' section. Fill in all the required fields.

  • You can also add dependents underneath by clicking the '+ Add dependent' button in the bottom right. Select whether the patient is the policy holder or not, and add other patients as dependents.

  • If the patient has linked family members in Dentally, these will be shown below with a button allowing you to quickly add them as dependents to this policy. If you delete the dependent from the policy, the policy will no longer appear in the dependent's list of policies, but it won't impact existing claims as long as the policy still exists.

  • When you have finished, click the blue 'Save' button in the top right.

πŸ“ Please note: You can add multiple policies to a patient's record. Primary and secondary policies will be selected automatically in accordance with the claiming rules. You can override this order by using the 'Reorder' button on the patient's 'Insurance' screen.

How do I run an eligibility check on a patient's insurance policy?

  • In Dentally, go to the 'Insurance' tab in the patient's record.

  • Click on the blue 'Run eligibility check' button in the top right.

  • If your policy is not supported, you will not be able to run the eligibility check. If your policy is supported, it will be checked directly with CDAnet.
